As an Industrial Design student one of the main ways I communicate ideas and concepts is through quick sketches. This blog is a daily log of my sketches to help me see where and how I can improve my sketching.

Last Class

3D Studio Max and VRay a powerful combo. I am just beginning to learn the power of these programs. Truely amazing stuff.

VRay Rendering

Our class is now behind schedule and it ends tomorrow, so we have stopped sketching before we move on to new material. Today we learned how to render in 3D Studio Max using VRay. This is my first try and I am pretty happy with it. The model was created as a sample by our instructor (Dosun) and then we were set free to render it. I look forward to learning how to manipulate this renderer to do what I want with my own 3D models.

Camera Again

Again, this sketch is an underlay done by Dosun (my instructor) and then I did the overlay work of shade, shadow, and color in about 5-10 minutes. The purpose is to practice using the cintiq and to learn quick sketch-rendering skills.

Quick Sketch (dosun)

This sketch was a 5 minute in class exercise to keep up with what we have learned on the cintiq. We are now hand modeling our mouse design, but Dosun did not want us to get to far away from sketching. The underlay sketch was done by Dosun before class and was given to us to sketch render over the top. I can do better, I need to learn to do so quickly!!!

Whale Page

I finally got a hold of a pen for or Cintiq's at school and did a little sketch page for this whale concept. Its playful. I can do higher quality work, but this project I am really focusing on getting "good enough" really quickly, so with that in mind I am very satisfied with the results.

Illustrator Rendering

The next step in our optical mouse project is to further explore the form by rendering in Illustrator. It is much more difficult to accurately render in this program, but it has some quick tools like the gradient mesh tool that make it fun to change and play with shade and shadow. I feel like I could do better with some of the details, but for the time I had I feel fine about this effort.
(coming up we are going to be making a quick foam model and then 3D scanning it back into Rhino)

WHALE!

My class had to sketch a concept for an optical computer mouse... I chose this whale concept because it seemed playful and comfortable with a cushioned whale tale and a mini-joystick toggle it has a great capabilities for virtual fun! The sketch was created in Photoshop using a Cintiq.

Marbel Redo

Here is a redo of the rendered sphere. I did not have access to a Cintiq or Corel Painter this time, so I just used my mouse and Photoshop. I like it better.
